NPD-BC Exam Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the NPD-BC exam, candidates must hold a current, active RN license in the U.S. or an equivalent credential from another country, have a bachelor’s or higher degree in nursing, and have worked as a registered nurse for at least two years full-time. Additionally, candidates need 2,000 hours of practice in nursing professional development and 30 hours of continuing education in the specialty within the past three years. Application Window: The Nursing Professional Development Certification (NPD-BC) exam is administered year-round through the Prometric testing system, offering flexibility for candidates. Once your application is approved, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) notice, allowing you to schedule your exam within a 120-day window.

NPD-BC Exam Format
Number of Questions: The NPD-BC exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 125 are scored, and 25 are unscored pretest questions used for future test development.
Exam Response Options: Multiple-choice format with four response options.
Testing Options: The exam is available at designated Prometric testing centers. Live remote proctoring is not available.
Time Allotted: Candidates have 3 hours to complete the exam.

Passing Score: A scaled score of 350 on a scale of 0 to 500 is required to pass the NPD-BC exam. ANCC examinations are criterion-referenced, meaning candidates are assessed against a predefined standard rather than compared to other test takers. Raw scores (the number of correct answers) are converted to scaled scores to adjust for variations in test difficulty.

NPD-BC Exam Proctoring
The NPD-BC exam is conducted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in collaboration with Prometric. Candidates must take the exam at an authorized Prometric testing center. This traditional method involves attending a physical location to complete the exam under supervised conditions. Currently, Live Remote Proctoring (LRP) is not available for ANCC certification exams, including the NPD-BC.

NPD-BC Certification Renewal
The Nursing Professional Development (NPD-BC) certification remains valid for five years. To renew your certification, candidates must fulfill specific criteria that ensure continued competency in nursing professional development.
- Continuing Education: Candidates are required to complete 75 continuing education (CE) hours in the certification specialty during the 5-year certification period.
- Renewal Categories: In addition to the CE hours, candidates must complete at least one of the following eight professional development activities: These categories include academic credits, presentations, quality improvement projects, preceptor hours, practice hours, professional service, publications, or retesting.
- Reactivation of Lapsed Certification: If your certification has expired for less than two years, you can reactivate it by completing the required CE hours, fulfilling one renewal category, and paying the reactivation fee. For certifications expired beyond two years, reactivation requires retaking the certification exam and meeting all other requirements.
